Safer Socials

Learn how to support your clients (and anyone!) in engaging with social media in a safer, more informed way - through becoming informed yourself!

Social media is an ever-changing landscape, and understanding what contributes to risk and protective factors can equip us with the knowledge and confident to have these conversation with athletes in ways that are more impactful. This workshop is designed to elevate the Dietitian or health professional’s skills and understanding about how to better able to support clients to protect themselves, whilst using social media for good.

This workshop is very practical in nature, so please bring your own phone or social media device of choice!

Part 1: changing the algorithm

Hosted by Amanda Bolton and Sarah Egan from Eating Disorders Training Australia, part 1 will introduce you to why social media use can be so fraught, then move into evidence-based strategies you can bring into practice to diversify the algorithm to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content, and boost protective mechanisms.

You will learn:

  • what the research says about social media and body image

  • the most problematic parts of the most common platforms

  • what content is likely to be most harmful for body image and how to influence change to improve this

  • how to make and sustain practical changes to influence what is seen to foster body satisfaction

You’ll learn - step by step - HOW to guide your clients to diversify their feed based on other interests and keywords and leave with super practical strategies to take into practice. Bring your phone!

Part 2: Safer social media use

Hosted by Fiona Sutherland, part 2 will move more into how to support people to protect themselves and set effective boundaries when using their own social media accounts and interacting with others online. We will also explorehow to have the very important conversation of “should I engage?” through using a practical reflective framework to support sound, self compassionate decision making.

We will discuss possible situations where images/bodies are being used in other’s social media accounts and how to establish boundaries where consent and privacy are being prioritised. This part of the workshop may be of particular interest to people who are working with higher profile individuals who are representing a company/brand/team/organisation.
